| OTAKAR KANIA - born 11.08.01947, Orlova, Czech Republic
Creation involves a constant perfecting of workmanship and process, this attitude is reflected throughout modern Czech design. Otakar Kania's work represents this ethic. His present artistic working style began with his studies of Engineering in Prague, where he focused on antique furnishings and restoration, as well as the original techniques used to produce such work. While studying, he perfected his technique in spherical inlay, this became a major theme in all of his subsequent work. However, his creation of new furniture in authentic styles most typifies his work. Creating his furniture, Mr. Kania has developed a unique form of expression that is contemporary while still reflecting his historical influences. The use of the pedestal is one such example, as well as many of his construction techniques. In some cases, the pieces themselves reflect functions long forgotten (e.g. the lady's secretary, or the small chess table). Postmodernism allows Mr. Kania to apply a variety of styles to his work, from cubism to op-art, organically combining these disparate influences into an individual expression by the craftsman. Further, a lifetime of technical experience and exposure to many aesthetics have come to maturity in Mr. Kania's work. He is one of few artisans producing such thoroughly modern furniture using of such time-honored construction techniques, including his use of French polishing as a finish.

With their contemporary style and historical influences, his inlaid sculptures are truly unique, leaving the observer to wonder whether they are antiques or modern creations. The size of his work relative to its style creates an impression of stateliness. Finally, it is necessary to appreciate Mr. Kania's sense of the grotesque in his humor, reflected throughout his work in its whimsical details and refreshing presentation. Otakar Kania has participated in several exhibitions in Prague. His work is represented in many Czech and foreign private collections. Otakar Kanias studio is in Novy Svet, one of the most beautiful and romantic parts of Prague. The distinct and suggestive poetry that fills this corner of the city also breathes from his works.
